Your sense of smell is one of the most powerful memory inducing senses of the human body. Make your Edison apartment smell like the holidays of your childhood with these easy tips.

Build a simmer pot and add in your favorite ingredients. Place a saucepan with water, sliced apples and cinnamon sticks over a burner on your oven to release the aromatic smell. If you don’t like apples or you used them all for the apple pie, use pine sprigs with cinnamon sticks instead. The smell is almost exactly like a real tree so your fake tree gets a little boost.

Make your own potpourri. There are no right or wrong ingredients, only those that smell great to you. For a holiday blend combine cinnamon, star anise, oranges, apples and cloves. Slice both the oranges and apples thin, place them on a baking sheet, and let them bake in the oven at 250 degrees until they are dry. After they dry, mix the other ingredients and the apples in oranges in a glass container with a lid. Let them marinate for a day. Place in a dish or boil 2 cups of water, add potpourri and reduce to a simmer for one time use.

Hang a sweet smelling garland. Create cinnamon applesauce dough for your garland by combining cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice in a small bowl. In a large bowl combine and stir together glue and applesauce. Add spices to the applesauce-glue mixture. Stir and use hands to make a “cookie dough” consistency (add more applesauce if too dry, cinnamon if too wet). Form the dough into a large ball. Pinch off enough dough to form into small balls, use a paintbrush to form a hole through the center, add the cloves while on the paintbrush, this helps keep the ball’s form. Put dough balls in a dehydrator at 215 degrees for about 2 hours. Once dry, string the dough balls with orange slices and popcorn on a garland. Hang on your tree, your banister or wherever you want.

Enhance pinecones. Spritz your pinecone decorations with cinnamon oil to make your Edison apartment smell like the holidays. The cinnamon oil can be bought in a store or created yourself.  After you spritz your pinecone, let it dry in a plastic bag for two weeks so the smell lasts. Your Edison apartment will smell festive in no time.
